DPNlive 2013 - The Year of ‘The Challenge’!

What do we mean?

Well quite simply, we want to promote/share Irish companies as well as other countries success stories with our readers.

There is too much doom and gloom out there these days particularly regarding digital print. Some companies who have been successful could help to change the fortunes of others just by talking about what they did to change and address this new economic, digital, and social environment that has happened.

Now your first instinct is to say, I’m not going to help my competitors. But you're not, you're helping yourself by thinking about what you have done, identifying successes and failures and staying strong.  As any good marketing person will tell you, you have to stay ahead of the competition and one way of doing that is by having a uniqueness that people will buy.  Telling your competition will help to make you stronger - keep you ahead.  Competition and a vibrant print sector is good for all.

Take the supermarket segment in Ireland. Tesco came in a few years ago and everybody said that this would annihilate the main Irish players.

Guess what - it didn’t! It just made them step up to the mark and be innovative. And now that sector is using every ‘innovative’ print concept to draw in footfall.

Another story

Growing Good Corn

James Bender, in his book "How to Talk Well", relates the story of a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it.

The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbours. "How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbours when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" the reporter asked.

"Why sir," said the farmer, "don't you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbours grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours grow good corn.

"Moral: We can only really win, when we help others win as well.

So competition is good, it’s positive and it makes for a better and more focused business arena.

DPNlive challenge this year is to do the same. OK, we don’t want you to give away your secrets, but send us in some copy that will show/demonstrate how you ‘stepped up to the mark’ by being innovative.

At the end of the day it is in everyone’s interest to have a vibrant digital print industry, not just here but all across the globe.
