Company builds its first manufacturing facility

to LEED standards.

HP’s new ink manufacturing plant in Israel HP’s new ink manufacturing plant in Israel HP today has announced the opening of an 11,000-square-metre ink manufacturing plant in Kiryat Gat, Israel. The facility has been built to produce ink for the new generation of HP Indigo Digital Presses announced in May.

The company said that its HP Indigo Division is expanding its facilities in Israel to cater for strong growth, the result of an accelerating market transformation from analogue to digital printing. HP Indigo reported record revenue in Q4 FY2012 and increased quarterly page volume by about 20 per cent over the previous year. It added that its share of the worldwide commercial press market had increased by 13 points year-over-year to 71 per cent.

The new HP Indigo plant is the first industrial building in Israel and first HP manufacturing facility worldwide which has been built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Central to the design was to achieve a high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. LEED Certification is a leading global standard for buildings that are efficient, cost-effective, and better for occupants and the environment.

The new HP Indigo’s Kiryat Gat campus now includes 56,000 square metres of building space and has been constructed to allow it to expand for future growth. The site also serves as the centre for training and for final application testing and qualification of each press before shipment. HP Indigo also has a manufacturing facility in Singapore.

“HP Indigo’s customers constantly demand that we push the boundaries and innovate in our product portfolio as well as in our manufacturing operations,” said Alon Bar-Shany, vice president and general manager, Indigo Division, HP. “With an additional plant supplying ink for the rapid ramp-up of our new family of Indigo presses, we can support our customers in growing their businesses and increasing their profitability in the highly competitive printing market.”

Inks produced at the new plant will begin shipping with the HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press. HP are marketing this as the first offset-quality digital press in a larger format (29.5 x 20.9 inches) suitable for printing nearly any size commercial job.  It has completed early installations of the press at customer sites in the United States, Europe and Middle East, with general commercial availability scheduled for the spring of 2013.

Press Release from Ricoh

Chas Moloney director Ricoh UK and IrelandChas Moloney director Ricoh UK and Ireland

Ricoh has confirmed its title sponsorship of the Ricoh Women's British Open for the 6th year.  The Championship, hosted at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club 13-16 September 2012, will see professional golfers make their mark on the global stage, following a historical year of sport in the UK in 2012.  Ricoh will continue to support the tournament organisers with a range of document services in their preparation for, and running of, the event.  As in previous years, Ricoh will minimise the environmental impacts of processing documents through its Sustainability Optimisation Programme. It will then offset any remaining, unavoidable carbon emissions from document management, as well as those generated from the travel of Ricoh guests to the Open.

Last year Ricoh neutralised 56 tonnes of unavoidable carbon emissions in this way, with carbon credits generated by clean energy projects in which Ricoh has invested.

To further align with the launch of its tagline imagine.change. this year, Ricoh is also enhancing its exclusive annual Connected Business Forum hosted at the Open with a round table debate that will  increase collaboration amongst its clients.  Attendees include C-level executives from leading organisations around the world. Together they will debate future business challenges, the impacts of technology and how to best optimise their business document processes.

Chas Moloney, director, Ricoh UK and Ireland says, "The Ricoh Women's British Open is one of the best global tournaments in the golfing calendar.  Each year we are impressed and inspired by the way the players continually work with their support teams to review and improve their techniques. It affirms our reasons for sponsoring the tournament as this is how we work with our clients.  We are focused upon collaborating with businesses worldwide to collectively determine the best ideas to optimise their business critical document processes and ensure they are operating more efficiently."

The Ricoh Women's British Open is also an ideal platform for Ricoh to apply its strong environmental values.  In addition to its sustainable document management behind the scenes, Ricoh will provide a series of activities for both players and spectators to reduce their carbon footprints.  All are invited to take part in the 'Green Initiative For Tomorrow' (GIFT) and to pledge their commitment to reducing their own environmental impact. For every ten people who pledge - either online or at the Spectator Village at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club - Ricoh and the Ricoh Women's British Open will plant one tree in Africa.

Sustainability is more than just buying certified paper!

Lode Deprez, Vice President Consumables & Process GroupLode Deprez, Vice President Consumables & Process GroupXeikon has said that it will participate with an information booth at the new EcoPrint show taking place in Berlin on the 26 and 27th September, 2012. The company says it fully supports the initiative to gather all the relevant players in the graphic arts industry including brand owners and print buyers in order to create higher sustainability awareness and more motivation to go beyond just ‘ordering certified paper’. The company said that at the show, Xeikon intends to inform print buyers and print providers on all aspects of the sustainability discussion.

The show organisers chose the motto ‘Think, Talk and Take Action’ for this first ever purely ecology focused event for the print industry. With over 20 years of experience in digital printing, Xeikon said it is well placed to think, talk and act on topics such as sustainability and recyclability of print. Michael V. Ring, VP of Worldwide Marketing at Xeikon said: “Xeikon started its eco initiatives around VOC reduction, waste reduction, recyclability, energy consumption and other sustainability efforts at drupa 2004. Sustainability is one of the four core criteria that every Xeikon solution has to meet, in addition to customer profitability, quality and flexibility.” Ring also pointed out that the new Trillium HVT liquid toner, announced at drupa 2012 by Xeikon, also meets all  the requirements in terms of no VOC emissions and paper recyclability.

Ricoh Helping to Lead the Way to Zero Impact Growth

Ricoh eco boardRicoh eco boardGlobal consulting firm Deloitte has recognised Ricoh as one of the top global organisations ready for a 'green and inclusive economy'.  The consulting firm researched the sustainability activities of 65 leading companies in 10 industries, for its first 'Zero Impact Growth Monitor 2012'.Only six companies made the grade, less than 10 per cent from the total sample taken. The report says that these organizations reached a level on which they are ready to take radical steps to transform their industries towards a 'green economy'.  It also highlights the fact that the majority of the other companies are still vague about their strategic growth ambition.

Ricoh is identified as reaching the Ecosystem level of sustainable business, joined by five other powerful global names, Puma, Nike, Nestlé, Unilever and Natura.  This achievement means it is recognised as one of the pioneering companies that have set measureable and ambitious mid- to long-term targets beyond 2020.  It has also embedded its sub-policies in a holistic strategic vision of its attempt to minimise its negative environmental and societal impacts.  Furthermore it was pointed out that a business in the Ecosystem level has to be in the process of establishing sustainable business ecosystems and creating truly shared value by also involving its suppliers and other stakeholders in its actions.

Ricoh said it has been focused on minimising its natural and societal impact for many years.  It was Ricoh's founder, Kiyoshi Ichimura that first acknowledged the importance of CSR (Corporate social responsibility) for the company more than 70 years ago.  He made a commitment to social sustainability in every aspect of Ricoh's business activities to innovate on behalf of its customers and to pursue sustainable business practices. Today Ricoh maintains that it strives to be a company people are proud to work for, going beyond compliance to encourage responsible growth wherever possible.  By linking its commitment to forward-thinking business strategies, it promotes development that is profitable and sustainable at customer sites as well as its own operations.

Chas Moloney director Ricoh UK & IrelandChas Moloney director Ricoh UK & IrelandChas Moloney, director, Ricoh UK and Ireland, commented: "Ricoh has set long term reduction targets to 2050, whereby, the Ricoh Group is committed to reducing the total lifecycle CO2 emissions from FY2000 level by 87.5%.  In Ireland and the U.K., we are very much on target at this stage by being continually proactive and innovative in terms of our sustainable activities.  To be recognised by Deloitte as one of the global leaders in this area is testament to all the hard work being carried out by the entire Ricoh team."

Ricoh's ethos to go beyond simply meeting regulatory requirements is highlighted by its unique Eco-boards in London, New York and Sydney. The objectives of these billboards are to communicate a message that prompts environmental awareness among the public and to encourage everyone to take a step towards a sustainable society.  Each relies on natural energy to illuminate.  If there is insufficient solar power, the sign may not light up which is an eventuality Ricoh readily accepts, in order to deliver its message.

Latest technologies and services on show to reduce the environmental impact of printing.

Ricoh Europe has said it will showcase the company’s latest technologies and services designed to help commercial and corporate printers reduce the environmental impact of their printing activity at EcoPrint Live 2012, Berlin on 26 and 27 September.

Ricoh Carbon Balanced Printing MemberRicoh Carbon Balanced Printing MemberGraham Moore, Business Development Director, Ricoh Europe commented: "Since the announcement of our new Carbon Balanced Printing Programme earlier this year and our environmental focus at drupa 2012, we have received an overwhelming response from the market,” said Moore. “EcoPrint will allow us to further demonstrate our continued commitment to helping print service providers improve their sustainable approach.  We will highlight how the strong link between our expanding range of eco-business initiatives - for commercial printing organisations, in-house corporate print room facilities and office printing environments - improves resource efficiency, processes and costs."

Ricoh's Carbon Balanced Printing Programme for print service providers is built on the companies Sustainability Optimisation Programme, which offers carbon balanced printing to the office market.   The programme calculates the carbon footprint of each print job, enabling the print service provider to reduce or optimise production where possible. Any remaining, unavoidable carbon emissions are offset through carbon credits.

Rioch maintains that as a result, customers can ensure that all printed materials produced on Ricoh printers are carbon-neutral and environmentally responsible. A new carbon calculator has been launched to help print service providers calculate and minimise carbon emissions for their clients' print jobs. It has been introduced as part of the continually enhanced Business Driver Programme that provides continual sustainability advice and guidance for production printing customers.

To demonstrate the company's growing eco-based technology portfolio, Ricoh will also show the Ricoh Pro L4000(tm) that features the next-generation piezo-electric print heads with durable aqueous latex ink. This also offers significant media support on a range of substrates and is ideal for the environmentally conscious buyer of printed signage, point of purchase and indoor and outdoor display. It will be available in North America and Europe in the first quarter of 2013.

Ricoh will showcase product lifecycle initiatives including reusability of remanufactured printers (Greenline), recycled system supplies and recycled media.

Ricoh confirmed that it will take the opportunity to illustrate how its cut sheet digital press systems have recently achieved International Association of the Deinking Industry (INGEDE) certification. This lays out the required criteria, regarding the removal of printing ink from recovered paper during the paper recycling process, have been met.

Visitors can also hear more about the importance of sustainability in product development via the show's innovators panel. Ricoh Europe's Graham Moore will participate in the panel debate hosted on the first day of the show.

Visitors interested in seeing Ricoh at EcoPrint can gain free access to the show via the company's registration site at http://worldregistrationsystems.com/fmbrooks_ric_visreg-2.htm.

Focus to be on sustainability

HP has announced details of its plans for the forthcoming EcoPrint Europe 2012 event, to be held in Berlin on September 26 – 27.

EcoPrint will see HP reiterate its focus on sustainability such as the HP Designjet L26500 PrinterEcoPrint will see HP reiterate its focus on sustainability such as the HP Designjet L26500 PrinterEcoprint 2012 is the inaugural staging of this show and HP said that it will reiterate its focus on sustainability at the event. In particular, it hopes to emphasise the commercial benefits achievable for print service providers (PSPs) that deploy technology designed to reduce the impact on the environment.

The company added that this will be demonstrated via live printing applications on the HP Designjet L26500 Printer, which features water-based inks that produce odourless prints; as well as through educational presentations and discussions.

HP will hold two informative presentations as part of the event's Ecoshowcase activity:

More sustainable choices for retail store decoration

26th September, 13.00hrs

This session will review some of the latest solutions for decorating retail stores and creating retail signage in a way that increases customer impact, whilst reducing environmental impact.

The environmental benefits of digital printing of labels & packaging

27th September, 13.00hrs

This session will look at examples of how brand owners have been able to reduce inventory, waste and the carbon footprint in their label and packaging supply chains, whilst enhancing their ability to make rapid design changes.

In addition to its educational presentations, Stephen Goddard, environmental leadership programme manager for HP's Graphics Solutions Business, will host a panel discussion on recent sustainability developments in the USA. Often an early indicator to what can influence methods and practices in Europe, this discussion will consider where the market is headed in terms of environmental issues.

Part of this session will look at the work of the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP), a not for profit organisation that is starting to win the support of well-known brands, some of which are already requesting that PSPs undertaking work for them have attained SGP certification. According to Goddard, environmental certification like the one from SGP can not only drive PSPs to take a structured approach to sustainability improvement in their print shop, but can also provide them with a 'badge of honour' to  demonstrate their sustainability credentials to their customers.

"Most PSPs would readily acknowledge that more and more customers - especially international brand owners - demand more sustainable print solutions and, increasingly, drive them to implement more sustainable production methods," he explained.

"Those forward-thinking PSPs that have taken such necessary steps would concur that printing with the environment in mind can be good for business; saving them - and even making them - money.”

Goddard believes that print business owners need to be at the heart of the discussion. EcoPrint provides the ideal forum to present new ideas, look at best practice and help PSPs to make informed decisions regarding their own environmental choices.

Ricoh has announced plans to designate June as "Ricoh Global Eco Action Month" to encourage Eco Actions by Group employees around the world. As part of the plan, the company turned off the lights on all billboards, Ricoh logo signboards and night lighting facilities at all Group companies around the world on the night of June 5th, which was dedicated by the United Nations as World Environment Day. The eco-powered billboards in New York (Times Square), London, and Sydney were excluded.

Chas Moloney director Ricoh UK and IrelandChas Moloney director Ricoh UK and Ireland"Ricoh Global Eco Action" began in 2006 as an environmental event to enhance and develop awareness among company employees worldwide. The concept was designed to specifically promote environmentally friendly actions by individuals. Ricoh said that the theme of the seventh year is "THINK & ACT ON YOUR OWN”.

Ricoh is encouraging employees to individually focus on energy conservation at work and at home, host and participate in environmental events, and take other actions that reflect their concerns for the environment. Ricoh says that this is another way of expanding its environmental conservation movement from Group employees all the way out to families, friends, business partners as well as clients.

The eco-powered electronic billboards which were excluded from the signage ‘switch off’ represent one measure being undertaken to "expand the circle of global environmental conservation."

The initiative is based on the idea that even if the billboards don't light up and fulfil their functions as signage due to weather, Ricoh’s hopes that the message the billboards convey will raise environmental awareness and lead to a sustainable society.

Experimental lighting began in April 2009, and following the completion of the first billboard at Times Square, New York in 2010, additional billboards were installed last year in London and Sydney. The average combined power generation of the three sites has been calculated at approximately 150,000 watts/hr per day.

Ricoh is building upon the company’s Sustainability Optimisation Programme, designed for the office, by offering the Carbon Balanced Printing Programme as a service specifically for commercial printers. Both programmes are accredited by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and focus on helping businesses to reduce impacts wherever possible and offset unavoidable carbon emissions through carbon credits generated by clean energy projects in which Ricoh has invested.

Chas Moloney, director, Ricoh UK and Ireland says: "We have always considered our impact on the world and demonstrated corporate social responsibility, so much so, that it is ingrained into our corporate values and integrated into the very heart of our operations. By dedicating the month of June to raising environmental awareness among our customers, suppliers and employees, we can make a real and positive change to the environment, further helping our clients to be more profitable and sustainable at their own sites as well as taking action in our own operations."
